Yep, I have decided to go green. As in save the planet. OK, that is a lie, only a little bit true. It really all started out because I needed to save money in my budget.

First, it was the amount of energy we consume. Not because of the bullshit fable of global warming. Yes, you heard me correctly, I’m putting it on the table and opening it up! Global warming has yet to be scientifically proven, but it is however, a proven fact that the earth has ALWAYS, we’re talking from the very beginnings, gone through cyclic climatic changes and this just happens to be one of them. In fact, I heard on the news yesterday that this warming trend, which quite some time ago, is nearing it’s end, which means in the next few decades we will be at the beginning of a cooling trend. Don’t all you tree huggers get your granola caught in your throat now. Did you know they have been able to actually prove (I know this concept may be foreign to some of you, but this are proven and not just theory, eh em!) this cyclic change? And did you also know that the culture changes with it? Stumped ya, didn’t I? The dark ages occurred during a cooling period. The renaissance and industrial age occurred during a warming period. Makes sense to me. When ever one was inside crammed together in front of the fire, not much happened. When it warmed up and people socialized more, great things happened. Crazy, but very true.

Any how back to my little story. My utilities where out of control expensive, so I really started to notice when unnecessary lights were on, etc. So you see, my greenism is more of an economic factor, rather than I want to save the world, that quite literally does not need saving, kind of factor. But, I figured, what the hell, if I make this world a little cleaner while I save some cash…cool!

A pet peeve of mine is product packaging. I hate it!!! Not only does it make me empty my trash more often, I simply find it to be annoying. I’m a little bit of a freak when it comes to having my life orderly and neat, that includes my kitchen. I use the cool modular containers from Tupperware to keep everything tidy.

So every time I get back from the grocery store I spend some time (way to much of my precious time as far as I am concerned) taking everything out of useless packaging ajnd storing it away in reusable containers. Obviously, we need to bring the stuff home some how, but really so much of it is over the top and wasteful. Once again, I inadvertently exhibit “greenie” behavior.

Now they have come out with these super cool new reusable shopping bags. I LOVE them to pieces! I have six from Walmart (4 regular, 2 insulated), another 4 from Kroger and 2 from Target

Best attributes of all three brands:
Walmart: thinner material but wider
Kroger: thicker material, feels more sturdy with a thick plastic insert in the bottom
Target: the thinnest of the three, but they zip into themselves, making a little pouch, for ease of carrying in your purse.
Why do I LOVE them so much, you ask? Well, because they hold more than the regular plastic bags, they don’t fall over in your car when you turn a corner and your oranges and bottles of condiments don’t end up rolling under your seats and you get to look like a big fat tree hugger in front of all the people at the store, while you look down your nose at them for STILL using plastic…how archaic! Get with the times people, we have a planet to save!!

Now that the secret is out…just wait until I post about my tendencies toward animal rights! I’m wondering if all this compassion has come with getting older? Hmmm…no time to ponder such things, but I can say that I am contributing to the effort. That is why I don’t fly anywhere anymore, I don’t want to feel guilty for all the jet fuel polluting the air on my behalf. Ha! Just joking, I really can’t afford the airfare. :)

One Response to “Going green”

  1. I loves me some reusable shopping bags. I bought some from Albertson’s a couple years ago because they were only $1/piece (though I do 90% of my shopping at Harmons, but they wanted $6/piece.. bullshit!) Anyway, so I’d bring my Albertson’s bags to Harmons, and inevitably I’d get all kinds of shit from the checker/bagger for it which really got under my skin. And every time they gave me shit, I would say, “if you also only charged $1 for your bags I would buy them from you!!” And finally a few months ago, they made a bunch of them, and are selling them for $1, so I bought 10 of em. I keep em in the back of my car, so that I can use them wherever I go. I HATE PLASTIC BAGS. They are a nuisance and, yes, it’s time to start reducing the amount of waste that we produce. Anywho.. yeah, love the reusable bags!
