In the past year, I talked someone into calling a suicide hotline (not this one, it was a local one) and he got some help. A few months later, I had to call 911 to help that same person, and he got the help he needed again.

Depression and suicidal thoughts can affect anyone. It does not matter what gender they are, what economic level they are at, what kind of seemingly perfect life they might have or not. You may not understand it, if you have not had to deal with it in a personal way. Do not judge the person in need. Unfortunately, they are in such a deep dark place, that suicide seems like the only option. I have never personally felt that type of despair. I didn’t want to have to deal with it when I came to helping someone I love. It was brutal. Having a place to turn to for help was crucial, because I, alone, did not have the ability to help him with his inner struggle.

Suicide has really affected me my whole life really. My Father’s Mother committed suicide when he was 18 years old. This changed my Dad in ways that I can not even explain. My Husband’s Mother also committed suicide 10 years ago, after a long history of depression and other mental illness. It has definitely affected my husband, which in turn affects my whole family. I’m just glad I was able to talk him into making the call and grateful he was willing to accept not only my help, but the help of others.

  1. Wow, never knew that story. How sad! And so so true…it’s frustrating that it’s still so taboo to talk about & some think it’s something you can control. Granted getting better over the years; but, still too hard for many! Glad you were there for your friend!! That’s your only hope to survive, is that knowing someone will always be there for you! We should all keep that in mind!!
