We finally got our firearm back today. The sherriff’s evidence office has had it since our “incident” back on Sep 6th of last year. I never fully explained the “incident” here on this blog, for multiple reasons. But if you are terribly interested you can check out this website to see where another blogger (Civilian Gun Self-Defense) posted the newspaper article concerning the “incident”. (It is fastest to find the article by holding down the “ctrl+f” keys to open the Find window, then typing in “BUFORD” and that should take you right to it).

As you have noticed, I call it the “incident”, because I hate to call it the “shooting” and it is much shorter than calling it “the day from hell that scared me more than anything every has or ever will again as long as I live and turned me into a basket case all full of a jumbled pile of raw nerves”. Anyhow, it took them a while to do ballistics testing on the gun and to close out the intvestigation and we had to painstakingly arrange an appointment with the officer in charge of the evidence office to retrieve it.

I must say that I am happy to have the gun back in the house, although we have moved to a new city, due to the “incident”, and I feel very safe in my new house and neighborhood and realistically the chances of this happening to us again are pretty slim. You’ve got to understand that I was initially livid not happy about having a gun in my house when Blain first got it. Not because I am some left wing card carrying liberal nutcase and not because I can not safely handle a weapon, I was in the Air Force after all and yes they do weapons training for all Air Force personnel. Guns are really fun to shoot…at targets, not at people.

Suffice it to say, I now want the gun in the house. Blain has already proven that he is more than capable of using it in a safe and effective manner. Although I have been trained and shot rifles, I am going to get trained and certified in the use of a hand gun. My kids were taught gun safety the day it first came in the house. They have always known where it was, could have messed with it, but have never touched it and definitely know not to under any circumstances. At the appropriate time, they will be trained to use a hand gun as well (they have already shot rifles on their Grandpa’s farm).

FYI: Blain was not charged with anything and it was ruled as self defense. The kid that was shot, survived and is now paralyzed. The District Attorney declined to prosecute him, feeling he has and will suffer enough in his current condition.

Now I feel closure on the “incident”.
